The CARIM Summer School on Euro-Mediterranean Migration and Development is co-financed by the Europe Aid Co-operation office and the European University Institute, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and co-organized with the Università degli Studi di Firenze, Facoltà di Scienze Politiche «Cesare Alfieri»

Introduction

International migration has become an all-important issue for the world as a whole, and for Europe and its neighbourhood in particular, and it will remain so for decades to come. It is an internal issue for all countries, a Community issue for Europe and an issue for regional organisations in Africa and the Middle East. It is also an international issue that is more and more prevalent within all bilateral and multilateral relations. Migration is central to the building of a Euro-Mediterranean area although, when the Barcelona process was launched in 1995, it was still regarded as a concern of lesser magnitude.

The issues of migration and development are connected. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that migration is engendered by the inequality of development between the countries of origin and of destination. On the other hand, international migration is regarded as a key tool in development, because of both the tangible (capital, investments, trade) and non-tangible movements (circulation of skills, cultural products, ideas) that it generates.

Migration has undergone rapid changes over the last few years, and will evolve significantly in the near future. Migration is also an issue of knowledge that must be kept up-to-date and reassessed constantly. Migration thus perfectly fits postgraduate studies and professional training.

The CARIM Summer School on Euro-Mediterranean Migration and Development offers post-graduate students and professionals a high-level training in the field of migration studies, focusing particularly on the area formed by Europe and the countries to the South and East of the Mediterranean. The School analyses the various interactions between migration and development of both the regions of origin and those of destination; migration policies and the regulation of migration; and integration processes. Research work will accompany teaching activities.
