Welcome to the fourth Migration Newsletter. Migration has shaped the history of the world over the centuries, having a significant impact on societies and economies. In particular, North Africa, Sub-Sahara and Middle East represent one of the most remarkable regions of the world with respect to international migration, with several co-existing migration systems.
CARIM research has been focused, since 2004, on these specific geo-political regions. Namely three dimensions of international migration have been accurately investigated: demographic and economic, legal and socio-political.

CARIM Migration Profiles provide an overview of demographic, economic, legal and sociopolitical aspects shaping migration in a specific country.
Referring to the above-mentioned research frameworks, Migration Profiles portray key trends and dynamics as well as legal and policy developments crucial to acquiring a general picture of outward and inward migration in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (hereafter SEM) and in Sub-Saharan African (hereafter SSA) countries.
Following the Country Migration Profiles on Morocco, Lebanon, Mauritania, the fourth one focuses on Egypt. The next Migration Profile will deal with Mali.

The increase in the migration of highly-skilled workers has been noticeable over the last decade in and throughout the SEM and SSA regions. Human capital quality has increasingly become a strategic asset for all developed and emerging economies, as well as for many developing ones, since it lies at the heart of economic growth. As the economic crisis ripples across the financial, social and political landscape, strategy for attracting talent are already at the top of policy toolkits, therefore nowadays investigating the pattern of this kind of migration becomes crucial.
CARIM research has recently focused on Highly-skilled migration, tackling the issue from a comprehensive variety of perspectives.

Summer School on 'Euro-Mediterranean Migration and Development'
The issues of migration and development are strictly connected. Since Migration has undergone rapid changes over the last few years, and will evolve significantly in the near future, it is an issue of knowledge that must be kept up-to-date and reassessed constantly. Migration, thus, perfectly fits postgraduate studies and professional training.
From 21st June to 2nd July the VI Summer School on 'Euro-Mediterranean Migration and Development' - organised in collaboration with the University of Florence - will be held at the European University Institute. The School will accept a maximum of 20 participants, who should have a strong research and/or professional background in the field of international migration in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Applications, in English or French, should be submitted exclusively online by 5th May 2010.
